UK eTA — What You Need to Know

From 2024, many visitors require an Electronic Travel Authorisation before entering the UK.

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is a pre-travel digital permission introduced as part of the UK's post-Brexit border security system. It costs £16, is valid for 2 years and allows multiple entries for stays of up to 6 months.

Citizens of EU/EEA countries, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and many other nationalities now require an eTA before travelling to the UK. Irish citizens and UK nationals are exempt. Check the official UK Government website for the full list.

Apply online via the official UK Government website (gov.uk/apply-for-an-eta). You'll need your passport, a digital photo and a payment method. Decisions are usually given within minutes to 3 working days. Apply before booking your flights.

The UK eTA costs £16 per person. This is a one-off government fee covering the 2-year validity period. There are no additional fees for multiple entries within the validity period.

An eTA is for nationalities who don't need a full visa — it's a lightweight digital permission. A Standard Visitor Visa is required for nationalities from countries not covered by the eTA scheme (e.g. India, China, Brazil). Check the entry requirements page for full details.
